Important Assessment Changes Made By Virginia Department Of Education In 2006

Applicants requesting initial teaching licensure are required to achieve passing scores on professional teacher's assessments prescribed by the Board of Education. The assessments required by the Virginia Department of Education are as follows:

Academic Skills Assessment:

*  VCLA (Virginia Communication Literacy Assessment) exam

*  Individuals who are seeking an initial license through the Virginia Department of Education, Career Switcher Program and will graduate prior to December 31, 2006 will have the option of taking the Praxis I pre-assessment exam or the Virginia Communication Literacy and Assessment exam. Individuals graduating after December 31, 2006 must take the VCLA exam as the Praxis I exam will no longer be an assessment requirement for Virginia.

Content Assessment:

  • Praxis II (Subject Assessment Test)
  • Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA) exam (for Elementary Education only)
  • American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) exam (if applicable)
