            The Norfolk Campus Counseling Graduate Program includes 11 full-time faculty members and offers master's, education specialist, and PhD degree programs in counseling.  The master's and PhD degree programs are accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).  The Norfolk campus counseling degree programs are traditional in nature and students attend classes in person on the Norfolk campus.  Full-time and part-time study is available in all degree programs.

            Program faculty members have earned national and international reputations as scholars in the field of counseling and program graduates are sought after as university counseling faculty members, counseling program leaders, and practitioners.  Faculty and students annually are recognized with numerous awards.  In 2009, the program received the Outstanding Counselor Education Program Award from the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) at the convention of the American Counseling Association held in San Diego, California.

 Doctor of Philosophy in Counseling
The Ph.D. in Education with a concentration in Counseling is intended to prepare individuals for employment as counselor educators in college and universities, clinicians in private practice and mental health agencies, and for counseling leadership positions in the public schools. This program provides doctoral students with the skills to carry our scholarly research, lead organizations, and create new knowledge. The Counseling Ph.D. program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP).


Master's Degree in Counseling (M.S. Ed.)
The Master's Program in Counseling prepares individuals for employment as counselors in clinical mental health settings (including private practices), college and universities, and pre-K through 12 schools. The counseling master's degree program is accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP).

Ed.S. in Counseling
The Ed.S. program in Counseling is a terminal practitioner degree. It offers a course of study to further develop professional skills, broaden knowledge of counseling, and provide fundamentals for leadership in the field. The program can also be designed to fulfill the academic requirements for state licensure as a professional counselor (LPC).  The Ed.S. degree is a 30 credit degree program beyond the master's degree.  Ed.S. students who do not hold master's degrees in counseling must include core counseling courses in their degree program, which will require more than 30 credits total.

Chi Sigma Iota Honor Society: Omega Delta Chapter
The mission of Chi Sigma Iota, the international honor society for professional counselors, counselor educators, and students established at Ohio University in 1985, is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the profession of counseling.  The Omega Delta chapter was founded at ODU in 2007 and is advised by Dr. Danica Hays.

Distance Learning Counseling Master's Degree Program at New College Institute in Martinsville, Virginia
A separate counseling master's degree program is offered at the New College Institute in Martinsville, Virginia and is delivered in a distance learning two-way video format.  The Norfolk Campus Counseling Graduate Program is a traditional degree program in which students must attend all courses on the Norfolk Campus.  Potential applicants who do not live within commuting distance of Norfolk are invited to review the New College Institute Counseling Master's Degree Program.
