PreK-6 Elementary Education: Licensure Only
For individuals who have a non-teaching Bachelor's degree and wish to qualify for a Virginia teaching license in grades PreK-6. This is a non-degree teacher education licensure only program.
Admission:
- Hold at least a bachelor'sdegree with an undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75. Note: Provisional admission is possible for students with a GPA between 2.5 and 2.75.
- Passing scores on PRAXIS I or the SAT as prescribed by the Virginia DOE.
*Praxis I: Writing B 176, Mathematics B 178, Reading B 178, or Composite B 532.
*SAT Scores: Prior to April 1, 1995, 1000 with at least 450 on verbal and 510 on mathematics. After April 1, 1995, 1100 with at least 530 in verbal and 530 on mathematics - Submit the Teacher Licensure Only Program Application with appropriate documents to the Program Advisor.
- Submit Non-Degree Entry Form to the University Office of Admissions, Rollins Hall. If Distance Learning student, please call 1-800-968-2638 prior to submitting the Non-Degree Entry Form to determine your Distance Learning ODU Site, or visit the website at http://www.odu.edu/distance.html
Continuance:
- Complete all courses required for licensure as outlined on the program advising form with at least a C-.
- Maintain a GPA of 2.75.
- MUST earn a minimum grade of B in ESSE 679 prior to starting the teacher candidate internship.
- Passing scores on PRAXIS II: Elementary Education (PK-6) content knowledge(as prescribed by Virginia DOE) MUST BE SUBMITTEDprior to beginning the teacher candidate internship.
- Passing scores on the Virginia Reading Assessment (VRA) as prescribed by Virginia DOE MUST BE SUBMITTED prior to beginning the teacher candidate internship. [Note: During the period from July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2006, no passing score was required.]
- All course work must be completed prior to starting the Teacher Candidate Internship.
Exit:
- GPA of 2.75
- Successful completion of Teacher Candidate Internship.
- Passing scores on Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) as prescribed by Virginia DOE.
