- We want to give belated welcome to Dr. Jim Marken who joined our faculty this past fall. Dr. Marken earned his PhD from Indiana University in 2006 and began teaching at ODU that fall. His research focus is on issues of culture that arise when seeking to design and develop instructional or other performance interventions in international environments. Dr. Marken will bring his expertise to our Human Performance Technology courses.

Defining our Field-What is Instructional Technology?
AECT defines instructional technology as:
"the study and ethical practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources" (Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 2006).

What is Distance Education?
Distance education is defined as institution-based, formal education where the learning group is separated, and where interactive telecommunications systems are used to connect learners, resources, and instructors.(Schlosser and Simonson, 2005).
