Richard D. Horner

Scholarly Pursuit Hello – I am Rick Horner. Some might say that I am a professional, life-long learner. While I have a M. A. in Computer Resource Management, I was interested in the Educational program at ODU. Why the interest?, because I had a great deal of practical experience with Instructional Systems Development (ISD) but wanted to augment this practical experience with additional academic experience. In May 2003, I earned my M.S. in Education from ODU, with special emphasis on Instructional Design and Technology (ID&T). I believe the ID&T program offered by ODU provides exceptional educational opportunities and I highly value and recommend this program to anyone who is involved in designing training/education. Currently I am pursuing a Ph.D. in Education from ODU. My current academic interests include planning and conducting training evaluations, Adult Learning Theory, and Andragogy. What is Andragogy? Malcolm Knowles defined Andragogy as “the art and science of helping adults learn." |
Professional Activities and History
I am the Professional Educator (PE) for the Joint Deployment Training Center (JDTC). Essentially, as the PE, I conduct training evaluations (e.g., course critique design/review). Formally, I have been Manager of Curriculum for the Joint Operation Planning and Execution System (JOPES) Training Organization (JTO). Additionally, I have served as manager of Systems Administration, as an instructor, and as a curriculum developer. I have proven experience in motivating, evaluating, and guiding employee performance. I have more than 20 years of work experience in a broad range of areas to include: training analysis, design, development, implementation and evaluation (ADDIE), distance learning, systems design and development, systems administration, management, technical writing, relational database design, prototyping, and programming.
Background
I am married to the former Helen Ann Roberts of Utica, NY. We are blessed with a wonderful daughter, Stefanie. My primary “hobby” is experiencing history - I especially enjoy reading historical biographies and visiting related historical locations. I also enjoy quotes – moments of focused truth - such as this one from Joseph Addison “What sculpture is to a block of marble, education is to the soul."
