School Librarianship - Initial Licensure

An Individual Who Is Not Licensed As a Teacher and Wants To Become A School Library Media Specialist may obtain a license as a school library media specialist k-12 plus a masters degree.
Students in this program must have a broad academic background in the liberal arts and sciences and must complete a core of professional education courses before taking the courses for the school library license. The licensure student completes a 6 credit semester-long student teaching experience in a school library. This program is a minimum of 43 graduate credits. Additional credits may be necessary to meet the liberal arts and sciences requirements of the Commonwealth of Virginia for licensure.

Students in this program are admitted to the university as graduate students by completing the university graduate admission form and submitting scores from either the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Analogies Test along with transcripts of all college work. In addition, students must submit passing Praxis I scores or equivalent as outlined by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
