School Librarianship - Endorsement and Master's Degree
An individual who has a valid teaching license in the Commonwealth of Virginia may obtain a master's degree and add an endorsement as a school library media specialist, grades k-12. The library core of courses are used as the Area I emphasis courses in either the Elementary/Middle or the Secondary Education Master of Science in Education degree program. In the Master of Science degree program, a student takes at least 35 credits, including the 25 credit emphasis area, 3 to 9 credits of prerequisites or electives, and a 7 credit research core.
See the:
Program Sheet for a complete list of the requirements.
Class Descriptions for the content of each library class.
Students in this program are admitted to the university as graduate students by completing the university graduate admission form and submitting scores from either the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Analogies Test along with transcripts of all college work. On the application, students should indicate whether they want master's degree in elementary education (library science) or secondary education (library science). In both programs the library science courses are exactly the same and result in an endorsement K-12. The only difference is the wording on the degree.
Students considering this program should schedule an appointment with Dr. Carol Doll the program director, by calling 757-683-3284 or 3283.
