American Education Week 2009
The charge of providing quality education to American children is not an easy one. Often those who dedicate themselves to this endeavor go unrecognized and at times fade into the background. Old Dominion believes that it is important to identify and recognize those individuals who have made this commitment. The Darden College of Education has jump-started a tradition of highlighting the achievements of educators who have gone above and beyond their duties during American Education Week. American Education week is a nationwide celebration spearheaded by the National Education Association (NEA). Here at Old Dominion, the celebration invites distinguished lecturers to campus, puts a spotlight on the accomplishments of our alumni through the Darden College Alumni Fellow Awards ceremony and closes with the Constance and Colgate Darden Lecture in Education.
The Darden College of Education Fellows program recognizes one alumnus or alumna from each academic department in the College for their outstanding efforts. The fellows were nominated by their respective academic departments and selected by the department chairs and the Old Dominion University Alumni Association. The Darden Alumni Fellows program is co-sponsored by the generous support of the ODU Alumni Association.
For their extraordinary accomplishments Nancy Chandler, Tim Forbes, Patrick Konopnicki, Fred Rovai, Linda Shifflette, and Joanne Steen have been named as the 2009 Darden College of Education Alumni Fellows. As part of the program, these fellows will return to their alma mater to share their life experiences and provide inspiration to students and faculty alike.
ODU will hold campus-wide events on November 19. In addition to the announcement of the fellows, The Darden College of Education has invited Dr. Michael Kimmel to be the guest lecturer. Dr. Kimmel is an American sociologist, author and a professor at State University of New York at Stony Brook. Dr. Kimmel will discuss his most recent book Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men.
