M.S.Ed. Higher Education - International Higher Education Leadership


The International Higher Education Leadership (HIEL) track is offered at Old Dominion University as part of the master's degree program in higher education for those seeking positions as administrators in international education programs, international admissions, international student services, study abroad and related administrative positions in universities and other post-secondary institutions.

The IHEL track is the first of its kind in the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is the result of collaboration among the Darden College of Education, the College of Arts and Letters and the Office of International Programs. The program provides education, training and professional certification in a rapidly expanding field within higher education, both in the US and abroad.

In addition to the specific courses noted below, 3 credits of the cognate courses may be met through completion of a foreign language course at the 300/400 level with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Credit for previous courses taken at this level may be granted if the student can show oral proficiency at the 2.0 ACTFL level "(intermediate-high").

  • Two internships in one or more of the units of the Office of International Programs, in a comparable office at another US university or abroad in a foreign university or accredited international education provider. The internship should be chosen in close consultation with the program advisor and apply to the cognate field.

Total = 42 credit hours (36 course hours; 6 hours internship)
