Graduate Curriculum and Instruction
The Department of Exercise Science, Sport, Physical Education and Recreation houses the academic program for undergraduate (B.S. Ed.) and graduate (M.S. Ed.) students pursuing teacher licensure and advanced studies in physical education and health designed for the PreK-12 school setting. This unique discipline is designed to promote the teaching competencies of these future and current professionals. The curriculum is conceptual-based, aligned with NASPE Standards and the Virginia Standards of
Learning. The coursework addresses a wide range of content and skill areas such as physical education pedagogy, teaching of sports, motor development, motor learning, exercise science, biomechanics, and health education.

The Graduate program has two emphasis areas in the Masters of Education in Physical Education Curriculum & Instruction:
The MS Ed in Physical Education Curriculum & Instruction requires 33 semester hours for completion.
The MS Ed in Physical Education Curriculum & Instruction with Initial Virginia Licensure requires additional semester hours to fulfill any outstanding licensure requirements.
Undergraduate
The BS in Physical Education requires a total of 120 semester hours is required in the baccalaureate degree program in physical education and health, which leads to initial teacher licensure in Virginia upon passage of the PRAXIS I, PRAXIS II, and completion of the culminating experience of the teacher candidate internship. A Virginia teaching license is accepted for licensure in many other states. Drivers education courses (6 semester hours) are offered for completion of the Virginia endorsement area and are highly recommended for those who intend to teach at the secondary level.
A minor in health is offered for students in other programs by completing these specified courses (19 credit hours) in health education.
An endorsement area in driver's education can be completed in a two-course series (6-credit hours). Driver's education endorsement is highly recommended for students desiring to teach on the secondary level.
