Admissions Criteria

Basic Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be at least the age of 18 by the year of admission.
  • Must meet eligibility guidelines established by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) on intellectual disability:
    • A person scores approximately two standard deviations below the mean of any standardized IQ test.
    • Limitations in adaptive behavior skills including conceptual, social, and practical skills that impact activities of daily living.
    • Evidence that the disability was present before age 18.
  • Must be his/her own guardian by the start of the program.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to get along well with others. 
  • Must be free of self-injurious behaviors and behaviors harmful to others.
  • Must have completed his/her Individualized Education Plan and received a diploma, certificate of completion, or equivalent.
  • Must meet immunization requirements for Old Dominion University.

Required Materials for Application Submission

  • Completed admissions application, which includes:
    • Two letters of recommendation, one from a teacher and one personal (non-family member)
    • Signed Assessment/Interview Agreement (included in packet)
  • Documented proof of disability diagnosis
  • High school transcript
  • Most recent Individual Education Plan, including most recent Eligibility Minutes and Summary of Performance
  • Application Fee
