The Hampton Roads Institute for the Advanced Study of Education is a group of twenty-four teachers, three each from the eight major school divisions in Hampton Roads, selected by superintendents, to promote communication between school divisions and the Darden College of Education.
The Institute was begun in 1989 and is now in its seventeenth year of operation. Interns meet six times a year, on campus, and discuss issues of concern to teachers and students. School divisions provide a substitute for interns; the Darden College of Education provides all other expenses.
Topics investigated include teacher professionalization, Virginia's Standards of Learning, student internships, and a number of other area.
