Bachelor of Science in Occupational and Technical Studies

The Department of STEM Education and Professional Studies offers five majors under the degree of Bachelor of Science in Occupational and Technical Studies. The five majors are business and industry training, fashion merchandising, industrial technology, marketing education, and technology education.

Admission:

For admission to the bachelor's degree teacher licensure programs in marketing education and technology education, students must:

  • Complete at least one semester at Old Dominion University,
  • Achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.75 on undergraduate course work completed at the time of application to the major with no grade less than C- in the major and the professional education core,
  • Achieve passing scores on the Praxis I Academic Skills Assessment (or have qualifying SAT or ACT scores) prior to enrollment in any education practicum course,
  • Present written recommendations from one faculty member from the Occupational and Technical Studies Department and one faculty member from another department (Admission to Teacher Education), and
  • Have an interview with the program leader.

For admission to the other bachelor's degree programs (fashion merchandising, industrial technology, and training specialists) students must:

  • Complete one semester at Old Dominion University,
  • Achieve a minimum grade point average of 2.00 on undergraduate course work completed at the time of application to the major, and
  • Have an interview with the program leader.

Continuance:

Students in the teacher licensed programs must:

  • Satisfy University requirements,
  • Maintain a 2.75 overall grade point average with no grade less than C- in the content area on the professional education core,
  • Successfully complete SEPS 297 and a student teaching interview,
  • Complete Praxis I prior to enrollment in SEPS 408, and
  • Complete PRAXIS II in the appropriate endorsement area prior to reporting to student teaching.

Students in other undergraduate majors must:

  • Satisfy University requirements,
  • Maintain a 2.00 overall grade point average, and
  • Maintain a 2.00 grade point average in major courses.

Students in all undergraduate programs must achieve oral communication competence through SEPS 402. Students also achieve writing competence through English composition, STEM 370T, and passing the undergraduate writing exit examination.

Exit:

Students in the two teaching licensure programs must:

  • Meet all University requirements for graduation including passage of the Exit Examination of Writing Proficiency and completion of the Senior Assessment,
  • Have an overall grade point average of 2.75, and
  • After December 31, 2006 must pass Virginia's Communication and Literacy Assessment.

Students majoring in the other undergraduate programs must:

  • Meet all University requirements for graduation including passage of the Exit Examination of Writing Proficiency and completion of the Senior Assessment,
  • Have an overall grade point average of 2.00 for other undergraduate majors, and
  • Have a grade point average of 2.00 in major courses.
