Occupational Safety Certificate Program

Old Dominion University's Programs for Continued Learning has partnered with Virtual Education Software, inc. to deliver continuing education noncredit courses for individuals online. These interactive courses provide expert and certified instruction at a pace that allows you to balance your professional development requirements.

There are five nonacademic courses required to complete the Certificate in Occupational Safety.  The courses may be taken independently as topic professional development, or all five completed for the Certificate.  The Certificate in Occupational Safety program is designed as an introduction to occupational safety and health, but may also be used as a refresher of the topics or as preparation for certification examinations

For completion of the certificate program, students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00 in all 5 courses taken toward the certificate. After successful completion of the program, a Certificate in Occupational Safety will be awarded.

Refund/Cancellation of Course Fee:

Students wishing to withdraw from the Certificate in Occupational Safety program course must submit written notification within one week of the program start date.  No refunds will be available 6 days prior to the program start date.  Students who withdraw will be assessed a 5% administrative processing fee.

Credentialing:

The certificate program in occupational safety is designed to prepare individuals to meet safety standards and guidelines in such areas as business, government, industry, branches of the armed services and other occupations. The goal is to prepare individuals in managerial operations which minimize financial losses resulting from accidents, health claims, legal actions and property damage. In addition, the certification program provides noncredit instruction as certification preparation or continuing education recertification training for maintaining professional endorsements. Initial proposed courses encompass Five (5) 45-hour noncredit web based courses. Additional 45-hour noncredit courses may be added as electives applicable to the certificate in occupational safety, or for future certificate training purposes.

XSFT 0101: Occupational Safety Standards, Laws and Regulations

Non-Credit: 4.5 CEUs (45 Contact Hours)

Course Description:

This course examines the development and interpretation of safety laws, standards, and regulations; identifying, interpreting, and citing various standards; and establishing the order of precedence of various federal, state, and local regulations. The course also reviews legal challenges of safety laws, cases, and legal decisions.

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to the principles of occupational safety and health programs. The course consists of a study of general principles, hazard recognition and evaluation, chemical and physical agents, the human work environment, control of hazards in the occupational environment, and OSH program requirements.

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to the effective management of occupational safety and health programs. The course consists of a study of the business aspects of safety programs, creating a culture of safety, and the various aspects of OSH programs that support a safety culture in the workplace.


XSFT 0104: Physical Hazards and Their Control

Course Description:

This course will review the various physical hazards encountered in the workplace and discuss the control methods used to eliminate, mitigate, or reduce those hazards. A hazard is a condition with the potential of causing injury to personnel, damage to equipment, loss of material, or lessening of the ability to perform a prescribed function.  A physical hazard is a non-chemical or non-biological hazard that includes noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, fire, electrical hazards, and mechanical or equipment hazards (impact, shearing, and compression).

Course Description:

This course is an introduction to the principles of Industrial Hygiene with emphasis on the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational hazards. The course consists of a study of general principles, hazard recognition and evaluation, chemical and physical agents, the human environment at work, control in the occupational environment, and program management.  This course will prepare entry level industrial hygienists and serve as preparation for the Certified Industrial Hygienist exam, when qualified.
