Our History

As school districts faced the first round of potential sanctions under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, and colleges developed plans to meet the requirements of the new Higher Education Act, it became clear that Old Dominion University needed to create a center to assist districts with meeting NCLB requirements for research-based education programs. In 2004, the Program for Research and Evaluation in Public Schools (PREPS) was created within the Darden College of Education to perform this function. During its first year, PREPS researchers met with the region’s superintendents to develop a research agenda. Superintendents made it very clear from the outset that they need consumables; research-based strategies that can be used by teachers Tuesday morning to ensure all students meet Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). They were caught up in the precision testing movement. Today, districts are requesting assisistance to develop assessment literacy. PREPS has developed a way to implement student asssessment for learning in the classroom. Routine work involves developing materials, infrastructure and evidence to support student self-efficacy.

Our Vision

We seek to leverage the potential of humankind, of public education students, families, teachers, administrators, and members of higher education in order to harness their talent, energy, and experience in the cause of changing lives. The PREPS philosophy promotes student self-efficacy.

Lessons Learned

In its first year, PREPS worked with superintendents to craft a research agenda, conduct literature reviews, develop strategies to leverage its assets, develop strategic alliances, conduct action research, and make an authentic contribution to the field.

The larger philosophical question is can you really boil it down to a number? Superintendents are increasingly responding to PREPS initiatives to examine where they are and how they can increase student engagement. They also tell us that they want to find a way to increase student learning with understanding. The good news is that together, schools and higher education are creating opportunities for practice-centered conversations among the parties (teacher educators, teachers, staff developers) that move back and forth between specific and general issues and aspects of daily teaching and learning to teach that leads to substantive student learning.
