Outreach

PREPS outreach will take a new turn in July 2007. The Virginia General Assembly has funded the Center for Teacher Quality and Educational Leadership (CTQEL). The Center will be located on the Virginia Peninsula and will in its first year partner with Newport News Public Schools to demonstrate a model of assisting at-risk schools. CTQEL represents a new breed of teacher and leader professional development intervention—one that merges K12 with higher education and the community and that is dedicated to changing lives. We address the most vital challenges facing schools and their leaders by working side-by-side (teacher educators, teachers, mentors, and staff developers) in the context of teaching and learning to create sustainable schools of the future where students and teachers are active agents for their own learning.
The Center will work with at-risk schools across the Commonwealth to train school leaders and teachers, provide graduate education for teachers and administrators, and provide teachers opportunities to pair with faculty members to conduct action research. Center objectives include:

• Train teachers in urban student learning strategies
• Train teachers to embed student assessment for learning into their curricular goals
• Train teachers to embed modeling and simulation into their curricular goals
• Educate teachers to serve as adjunct faculty in an early college program
• Train school leaders to create the conditions for success
  Establish a K12 student-to-teacher program
• Align STEM career development with business partners
• Provide opportunities for teachers to conduct action research

Together with the community we will create breakthrough, system-shifting innovations through the transformation of individual and collective patterns of seeing, thinking, and acting. We help communities mobilize their assets in an organized way to help children meet their educational goals and their general well being.
