What is SCHEV?

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) is the Commonwealth's coordinating body for higher education. SCHEV was established by the Governor and General Assembly in 1956. Its mission is to promote the development and operation of an educationally and economically sound, vigorous, progressive, and coordinated system of higher education.

Under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB Act), Title II, Part A, Improving Teacher Quality State Grants, Old Dominion University is collaborating with Portsmouth Public Schools and NASA Langley Research Center to build teacher capacity in middle and elementary schools by strengthening core content area knowledge-base and strategies for effective delivery of information in Science and content area reading strategies for teachers and teacher-leaders. The project aims at teacher capacity by focusing on professional development, sustained on-site classroom-based support, and mentorship programs for teachers and students.
