The professional education preparation programs at Old Dominion University are accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Virginia Department of Education.

Undergraduate Teacher Education Programs

Students who wish to teach in any of the disciplines listed below  must pursue an appropriate major leading to a baccalaureat degree in either the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Sciences, or the Darden College of Education.  In addition, students must apply and be admitted into the Darden College of Education Teacher Education Program and complete designated professional education courses and licensure requirements. K-12

Secondary Education (6-12)

Admission Requirements

  • Be a declared major in the appropriate academic department;
  • Have a 2.75 grade point average overall, in the major, and in the professional education core courses (2.80 for IDS majors, beginnning with the 2004-2006 catalog)
  • Earn at least at least a C- in all courses in the major and in the professional education core;
  • Have passing scores on Praxis I or achieved State Board of Education approved scores on the SAT or ACT; and 
  • Submit the Undergraduate Teacher Education Application

Application Procedures

  • Application forms may be obtained in Teacher Education Services and Advising, Room 152, Education Building
  • Complete the Undergraduate Teacher Education Application with all signatures in Step I, II and Step III, and the Professional Attributes Self-Reflection Scale 
  • Submit this form with a copy of your passing Praxis I scores or equivalent SAT or ACT scores to Teacher Education Services and Advising, Education Building
